At the core of our technology is S53P4 bioactive glass – a smart biomaterial consisting solely of elements that exist naturally in the human body.

Characterised by its ability to firmly attach to living tissue and chemically bond with surrounding bone, S53P4 bioactive glass naturally facilitates the formation of new bone. Thus, it is a unique material for filling defects and replacing damaged bone tissue because S53P4 bioactive glass functions as naturally as your biology.

Smart Healing™ solutions are osteostimulative* and come with a range of benefits for filling, reconstructing and regenerating bone defects as well as for filling bone cavities, voids and gaps in both adult and pediatric patients.

Diabetic Foot Osteomyelitis Surgery

Diabetes and, in particular, diabetic foot osteomyelitis (DFO) is a rapidly increasing disease. Together with antimicrobial resistance (AMR) it is one of the greatest challenges facing healthcare today.

The long-term clinical use of our Bonalive® products has proven to be safe and effective in osteomyelitis surgery. The world needs solutions that are smarter and more sustainable for all patients worldwide.

For bone regeneration in the diabetic foot with chronic osteomyelitis, we offer Bonalive® granules. For facilitation of granule containment in challenging diabetic foot surgery, Bonalive® putty can be used.

Bone Infection Surgery

Bonalive® granules has proven effective for bone cavity filling in chronic osteomyelitis treatment. In cases where the cavitary defect allows sufficient debridement of the necrotic tissue, the granules can be used in a one-stage procedure.

Simultaneously with inhibiting bacterial growth, the granules heal dead space by stimulating bone formation. This enables cost-effective healing and reduces the length of hospital stays.

Mastoid Surgery

Long-term studies have shown that mastoid cavities with continuous infections and cleaning difficulties can be successfully obliterated with Bonalive® granules CMF. Over a period of more than 20 years, in both adult and pediatric patients, Bonalive® bioactive glass has achieved success in mastoid reconstruction surgery.

Spine Surgery

Bonalive® putty has been developed to meet the demands of spine surgeons who need an easy-to-use, highly moldable biomaterial for bone regeneration. In some procedures restrictions on the local harvesting of bone graft will limit the use of autograft. Furthermore, although autograft is the standard treatment, many cases require volume expanders. For infected spine we recommend Bonalive® granules and for minimal invasive surgery we suggest Bonalive® putty MIS.

Benign Bone Tumour Surgery

The long-term use of Bonalive® bioactive glass for treating bone defects created by benign bone tumors – including enchondromas, simple cysts and aneurysmal bone cysts – has shown that the granules dissolve slowly and the grafted area remodels into bone over time. As such, Bonalive® bioactive glass has the ability to stimulate bone formation and restore anatomical structures in both adult and pediatric patients.

By stimulating new bone formation through osteostimulation*, Bonalive® bioactive glass induces a high but balanced local bone turnover. Bioactive glass does not disturb the normal growth of bone in children, and its performance has been proven in a prospective randomised study, that involved follow-up ranging up to 14 years.

Trauma Surgery

The clinical use of Bonalive® bioactive glass in trauma surgery is supported by a long-term randomised prospective trial, including 11-year follow-up of patients with tibial plateau fractures. The results from the trial clearly prove that the long-term performance of Bonalive® bioactive glass is comparable to autograft.

By stimulating new bone formation through osteostimulation*, Bonalive® bioactive glass produces a high but balanced local bone turnover. The solid structure of Bonalive® bioactive glass provides a range of benefits, such as allowing the biomaterial to withstand impact to the bone defect. The bioactive glass effectively maintains its volume, and hence does not shrink or expand.

Bonalive® putty is intended for use in small and medium size defects. When conducting minimal invasive surgeries Bonalive® putty MIS is recommended, while for larger defects the product of choice is Bonalive® granules.
